At the Minke Skaberne Library for the Blind and Visually Impaired, an exhibition by Croatian author, professor, and artist Iris Lobaš Kukavičić was opened on October 9, 2025. The exhibition was created as part of the Multisensory Art project and will be open until November 14, 2025. The title of the exhibition is REQUIEM FOR THE SEA. Through it, the author sought to draw attention to the pressing problem of marine pollution caused by plastic waste. The exhibition takes visitors on a unique multisensory experience that combines touch, sound, smell, and light.
The works from the Requiem for the Sea cycle are designed as reliefs on canvas. Fragments of waste plastic bottles are transformed into organic forms reminiscent of stylized coral structures, seaweed, or fossilized remains of the ocean floor. The waste material, removed from the context of pollution, is transformed into rhythmic surfaces and emphasized textures that invite tactile exploration. In the darkened gallery space, all visitors are confronted with the experience of limited vision, which brings them closer to the perception of visually impaired individuals, who can also experience the work tactilely.
The ambient music Requiem for the Sea by composer Srđan Berdović further immerses the audience in a meditative atmosphere and creates a synesthetic experience in which the visual, tactile, and auditory merge into a unified whole. This contemporary requiem is a tribute to the sea that is disappearing before our eyes, and a reminder of the responsibility we bear for its future – as it remembers every trace that humans leave through their actions.
